This picture maybe from 2013, but our unique lifestyle started years before this . . .
It all began in 1998 in a World History Class at The College of New Jersey.
When the professor asked, “Can someone give me an example of one of the earliest forms of alcohol?,” this young man in the front row raised his hand instantly and enthusiastically shared, “Mead!” Looking back on that moment, Christina should have instantly seen a glimpse into her future life married to an archaeologist with a thirst for ancient footways.
Fast forward 20 years . . .
3 kids,
5 degrees,
2 corneal transplants,
5 moves,
1 TV show (The Great Human Race),
1 Online show (The Modern Stone Age Family)
& countless fermented jars and butchered animals later. . .
Our Modern Stone Age Family
We are committed to helping you achieve a deeper connection with food and your family by learning how to #EatLikeaHuman!
It did not happen overnight for us – not even close! It’s taken over twenty year to truly get into a dietary routine with ourselves and our three teenagers, but it doesn’t have to take you and your family this long. We can help you fast-forward this process so your family is eating real, nutrient dense food that tastes delicious!
The Schindlers live in a suburban Maryland town with 3 teenagers trying to figure out how to balance a healthy diet with a busy modern life.
3 Turning Points for our Family
We are your typical American family – 3 kids, a dog, and a house with a yard in the middle of suburbia on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We’ve had a few truly unique events that have shaped how we raise our kids, how we feed our family, and how we prioritize how/where we spend our time.
A TV Show. A Year Abroad. A Bread Business
- In 2015, Bill co-starred in The Great Human Race and traveled the world for 6 months living 2.5 million years of history, while Christina attempted to hold down the fort at home with 3 kiddos. What a whirlwind for us all! Check out our GHR page to see episode clips plus learn how LinkedIn was the key for Bill being selected as a co-star!
- In 2017, our entire Modern Stone Age Family moved abroad and spent a year living in Ireland and traveling the world learning about indigenous foodways. We hit 15 countries from South Africa to Thailand to Germany! Visit our Year Abroad page to learn about all these adventures plus the drama of having only 1 bathroom – off the kitchen!
- In 2020 during quarantine, our oldest daughter, Brianna, started a sourdough bread business called, Rise By Brianna. In 24 hours, she built a website, passed out samples to our neighbors and started collecting online orders. We saw immediately the impact of real, nutrient-dense food on our community. This business, started by our 16 year-old daughter during COVID19, gave us the push (or should we save shove) to take our #EatLikeaHuman message to the next level. Christina resigned her position on July 1st as the Supervisor of Special Education for a local school system to pursue this movement fulltime and it’s just the beginning!
Learning to cook from scratch has always been an important part of our family dynamic.
Whether making homemade pasta, butchering 1/2 a pig or baking a birthday cake, all 3 kids are hands-on with their food and diet and have been since the very beginning.
And we can teach your family how to do this too!
Whether flintknapping or shooting a bow, we’ve made every effort for our kids to learn from their ancestral past right from the very beginning.
This is a wonderful way to connect with your children, teach them a life skill, plus build some one-of-a-kind memories. If you are interested in your family learning these skills – either cooking or primitive tech or both – please email [email protected] to get something scheduled!

The Parents
VEGETARIAN MEETS COLLEGE DROP OUT.
Bill & Christina give true meaning to the phrase, “opposites attract.” While Christina is an educator and whiz with technology, Bill is a professor and expert in primitive technology. She can build a website, but he can knap a stone tool. Blending these opposite ends of the technology spectrum make for amusing conversations over fermented-homecooked meals, but there is no denying they are both aligned to finding a healthy balance in our modern world.
The Kids
3 TEENAGERS. 2 SPORTS. 1000S OF LOAVES OF BREAD.
Brianna
AGE 17
Growing up in the suburbs hasn’t kept Brianna from seeing the world. In between field hockey practice, texting with her friends, and helping out around the house, Brianna found time to train at the world renown Italian Culinary Institute and start a sourdough bread business.
BILLY
AGE 15
It didn’t take Billy long to steal the mantel of best archer in the family from his dad. At age five, he made his first bow and arrow set from scratch. He immediately shot a bird in mid flight. He shoots like Robin hood, but still struggles to pick up his socks!
ALYSSA
AGE 13
The only thing that rivals her love for sweets is her passion for animals. You’ll find her baking a fresh batch of cookies to deliver to friends or hanging with her puppy & hamster. Truly the firecracker of the family, Alyssa’s tenacious spirit and sense of humor keeps everyone on their toes.
