It is 4:32am and I am perched on a stool in the basement attempting to type my first official blog as a wanna-a-be, self-employed entrepreneur.
I can hear Brianna around the corner talking to her friend in Ireland (it’s 9:32am there so all good) as she mixes focaccia to make 48 loaves for tomorrow’s deliveries. Bill is outside enjoying the crisp morning air as he starts the fire in our wood fired oven to hand-bake 40 sourdough loaves today. Is this our new normal? Just two days ago, my title was Supervisor of Special Education and now I am sipping coffee, drafting a driving route for tomorrow’s deliveries, making signs for our table at the farmer’s market, and trying to keep the constant swirl of numbers and dollar signs quiet in my mind.
How the hell are we going to make this work?
We just slashed our income in half – literally in half – to follow this dream we have had for years. My husband, Bill’s research has brought us around the world working with traditional cultures to see how they harvest, prepare and consume their traditional foods ranging from cooking ant weaver eggs in Thailand to drinking a mixture of fresh blood and milk in Kenya to learning how to nixtamalize maize in the mountains of Oaxaca. What we have learned as a result of these experiences has left an everlasting impact on our hearts and minds – there are just so many amazing, kind-hearted people in the world and they have helped to completely transform the way we eat as a family . . . and now our mission is to share what we have learned with you!
Longest day EVER working!
My first day in this new “job” was yesterday – July 1st. It was an intense, 15 hour day. In fact, I was on my feet so much that my Apple watch actually prompted me to stand up because it thought I was sitting!! Just too funny, but very telling to my former work “behind-the-computer” positioning. As I collapsed into bed last night, I felt satisfied and content knowing that our family is focused on impacting the diets and health of others – whether in our local community or connected to us virtually from around-the-world. We’re gonna do this. I don’t know entirely how as all those numbers keep rolling through my mind, but we will!
I hope you will follow along on our journey, taste some of our yummy and healthy food products (we will be able to ship shortly so stay tuned!), attend a virtual class or two (they will be posted soon) so you can learn how to cook like this for your family, and most importantly, learn alongside with us as we discover how to #eatlikeahuman so we can all live our healthiest lives possible!
How Do I Get Some Sourdough?
We are in the process of getting a retail license so we can ship the bread out of Maryland. For those of you in Maryland, head to Rise by Brianna and check out the sourdough offerings and get your orders in today! We are busy getting ready to debut some new snack options so stay tuned!
I’ve always seen Bill and Brianna fold the focaccia but I had no idea how sticky – and fun – it actually could be! Measuring my first mother for focaccia with coffee mug that has inspired me. every. single. day. for the past 2+ years when I got it while we were living abroad in Ireland.
Congratulations on all you have achieved! I wish I lived closer to be able to get your sourdough bread plus more on a regular basis. Looking forward to hearing when you can ship out of Maryland. I am planning to make a trip in the future to attend one of your classes. Wishing you continued success, good health and happiness.
thank you so very much for your kind words! We’ll let you know when we are shipping!
